Majestic in size and shape Hysterically foraging with dipped-in head Pinkish tint lightens up the surface Flamingo it is! Gorgeous greater flamingos flock together at Ousteri Lake, Puducherry between mid or late June till September every year. They arrive here once the water level drops as the lake serves a massive feeding ground with variety of food. A Flock of Greater Flamingo Watching these adorable creatures is a feast to our eyes. Their delicate elongated neck, curved head with downward positioned beak makes them distinctive. They feed on algae, diatoms and sometimes even crustaceans like shrimps, prawns, etc. Thus the pink colouration, which is predominantly caused by beta-carotene due to its diet preferences. The other day (last week of August) when I visited the lake, I saw spot-billed pelicans in huge numbers (around 500 approx). They were busy feeding the cat fishes along the banks. புதுச்சேரி – ‘பாண்டி’ என்று பிரபலமாக அழைக்கப்படும் இந்த சிறிய சுற்றுலா நகரத்திற்கு வரும் பலரது எதிர்பார்ப்புகளில் முக்கியமாக இடம்பிடிப்பது மது, பிரஞ்சு கட்டமைப்பான கட்டிடங்கள் மற்றும் கலைகள், கடலோர உல்லாச விடுதிகள் போன்ற மேலும் பல.  இது போன்ற புத்துணர்வு காரணத்திற்காக மட்டுமே அறியப்படும் இந்த ஊரில் வசிப்பதால் வேறு ஒரு கண்ணோட்டத்துடன் பார்க்கும் வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது. இயற்கையோடு இயைந்த இடங்களை அறியும் ஆர்வத்தோடு தேடுகையில் பாண்டியைச் சுற்றி பல இடங்கள் இயல்பாக சென்று வரக் கூடிய அளவில் உள்ளதை உணர்ந்தேன். அவ்வாறு பார்த்த சில இடங்கள் உசுட்டேரி, கழுவேளி, வேல்ராம்பேட் ஏரி, சின்ன வீராம்பட்டினம் கடற்கரை, கணபதிசெட்டிகுளம் கடற்கரை, தேங்காய்த்திட்டு அலையாத்தி காடுகள், மற்றும் புதுச்சேரியைச் சுற்றியுள்ள எண்ணற்ற ஏரி, குளங்கள் ஆகியவற்றிற்கு ஒரு பார்வையாளராக மட்டுமல்லாமல் ஒரு ஆர்வலராக, கற்கும் நோக்கத்தோடு (பள்ளிக்கு செல்லும் மாணவரைப் போல்) சென்றேன் . தொடக்கத்தில் பெரிய எதிர்பார்ப்பு ஏதும் இன்றி சில நேரங்களில் தேடியும் சில சந்தர்ப்பங்கள் தானாக அமையவும் இந்த இடங்களுக்குச் சென்றேன். ஆனால் நம்மைச் சுற்றி

Sometime back, when I travelled to Chilika Lake (Lagoon), I got a unique chance to educate children as well as experience nature, both of which I adore. It was a nature camp and I was sent there officially to educate the children about nature and its significance. It’s always cool to teach children, especially those at elementary and secondary school level. They are charming, inventive and most importantly mischievous. On a Hunt towards the never ending horizon As part of the nature camping programme, we are advised to stay within the limits of any protected natural landscapes, viz-a-viz wildlife sanctuary, reserved forest or national park. We stayed in the midst of a lavish green backdrop encompassed by a variety of species, resident of Chilika.
